Approximately 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Police then located multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state early analysis indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to where it came from; officials are presently not informed of any injuries in association with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A senior representative stated the attack left him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing attack five years ago," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine people by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in 2020.
