Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
